Maintaining the change means focusing on the experience you want to have happen, and creating it by noticing what you are experiencing in the moment and redirecting it towards your values. This calls for psychological flexibility.
Mindfully Maintaining the Change
Use your mind appropriately.
When we are in the maintaining stage, it suggests that we have identified the cultural barriers and the psychological barriers to behavioral change, including an inability to effectively manage stress, lack of understanding about what causes a person to smoke, lack of confidence or faith in being able to change behavior and the expectation that one's motivational level will remain high. Another barrier is our desire for quick results and immediate changes or rewards.
The above tells us what we need to do in the maintance stage. We need a plan that address each of the barriers to change on a daily basis. It is important to awaken daily with our plan in mind and how we will work the plan.
